Professor Thomas graduated in Medicine from the University of Adelaide. He completed his physician training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and gained the MRACP in 1969. He then joined the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science and trained in chemical pathology, which he continued at the Clinical Centre, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, U.S.A. In 1973 he attained his FRCPA and MAACB qualifications. He was appointed Head of the Division of Clinical Chemistry at the IMVS in 1980. In 1993 he was appointed to the Chair of Chemical Pathology in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Adelaide with the concomitant responsibilities as Head of Chemical Pathology Services at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. He was appointed Chief of the Division of Laboratory Medicine in 1999. In November 2001 he joined Gribbles Pathology as Medical Director in South Australia. His subsequent appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Adelaide has enabled him to continue his teaching activities. Throughout his career he has continued clinical practice in the area of lipid and other metabolic disorders.
